A
small, friendly group of Centrepoint members successfully relaunched the classic monthly
Icebreaker Lunch event this week. Teufelhof – one of Basel's more refined
restaurants – delighted us with very cheerful service, outstanding food quality
and a sophisticated atmosphere. Our diverse and engaging conversation was, however,
what made the experience so enjoyable. As community shoves social media aside and
puts raw face-to-face sharing back where it once was – centre stage – we find
ourselves fizzing with desire for more new faces. The next opportunity to
enjoy 'more': third Tuesday in May (find details in the May issue of Horizon).
Thank you Tony for organising this event.

Tomorrow's coffee morning from 10:30 - 12:30 will be 'light': it will be staffed by your fellow members instead of the regular crew, who are all busy with the members' meeting (AGM) preparations in the evening. Pitch in and, remember, every little bit helps! Small donations (2-5 CHF) for coffee, tea, biscuits are always welcome. Feed the piggy bank!

Several members have asked for additional assistance in renewing and paying in their Centrepoint membership fees. This is quite understandable, as it can be confusing! Please note that Centrepoint no longer accepts cash payments for membership fees at any time. The main reason for this is that it is a security/audit trail nightmare. Can you imagine what keeping good accounting is like? Secondly, it avoids making our volunteers carry an undue burden. Lastly, this protects our members who can be sure now that the money they pay in does actually go to the benefit and building of the organisation. Payment options are as follows:
- Transfer: You can transfer the money from your Swiss bank account to Centrepoint’s post account number:
IBAN number CH05 0900 0000 4545 98995 (BIC clearing no: 9000)
- Post Office or Bank: Pay in Switzerland by using the EZ (Einzahlungschein, a pink payment slip used by the Swiss Post Office and most Swiss banks). The account number is: Centrepoint, 4051 Basel 45-459899-5.
Please write your Membership number/User ID and/or your Last Name, First Name in BLOCK CAPITAL LETTERS in the box marked "Zahlungszweck/Motifversement/ Motivoversamento”.
Thank you for your attention! See you at Centrepoint soon. Sincerely, Chopin

Dear Readers: The entire magazine of The Basel Journal, including the archive of all previous issues, is now available online for 25 Swiss Francs a year. So you can read our magazine at your lunch break at work, in the lounge at any airport or on your sofa at home. This newest issue which is now online brings us closer to our mission of bridging the gap between German speaking and English speaking people living in Basel. Anyone who is interested in taking a peek at The Basel Journal and reading articles about the Basel region in English and German can sign up for the online issue for free in February and March. This is a unique opportunity! Simply send us an email with the subject "online access" to the following address: verlag@thebaseljournal.ch, and we will send you your personal login information. Then you will be able to read the current issue, as well as look through our archive online. Have you already subscribed to The Basel Journal ? No worries, you will have received your login information with this issue, and this will remain active until your subscription runs out. From issue 2 in 2013, everyone who is interested in The Basel Journal can buy an online-only subscription for only 25 Swiss Francs a year. Let me note that The Basel Journal is NOT the same thing as Basel Family Magazine. The Basel Journal offers in-depth reporting about people of interest, historical people and places in the greater Basel area, and life in general in Basel. Our journalists are very excited to help you learn more about the city you live in, written side by side in German and English. www.thebaseljournal.ch

For those members who receive the full-colour Horizon electronically, the 2013 February issue is now available on the secure area of the website. Please sign in / click here: 2013 Feb Horizon Thanks to all our e-readers who help keep Centrepoint's postal mailing costs down as well as saving the environment -- it would be helpful if you stay "green" and avoid picking up a paper copy when you are at the centre. The paper copies there are meant for new members who join in February!

Centrrepoint has been asked to support the University of Basel’s Department of Geography/Urban and Regional Studies in carrying out a study on integration of expats in the Basel region (including those residing in France and Germany as well as other cantons besides Basel-Stadt).
Participation is completely voluntary and anonymous and complies with Swiss data protection laws. The aim of the study is to better understand the integration process of expats and how they perceive Basel as a place to live and work. Since the study is also endorsed by the integration departments of Basel-Stadt and Basel-Land, the results could lead to actions to improve the support for expat integration.
The broader the participation and more detailed information they receive, the more likely the results will have power. The organizers hope that several thousand expats will participate.
So, if you would like to, please take the time (20 – 30 minutes) to fill out the online survey:
http://flexiform2.unibas.ch/formular.cfm?EID=5746
Please pass this on to other expats and encourage them to fill out the survey. The aim is to have the broadest possible representation:
- Nationalities—not just native English speakers and of course including German nationals
- Length of time here—please especially try to reach newcomers
- Employed family members, accompanying spouses and partners, children who are old enough to fill out the survey themselves
Should you wish further information or have any comments, please feel free to contact the following people:

BaselConnectsPeople We are excited to remind you of our upcoming BaselConnectsPeople event at a brand new location. Hosted this month by the Gymnasium (High School) located across from the Basel Cathedral on historic Münsterplatz, our popular buddy/Götti/mentor event will be held on two dates in January. We are looking for participation from locals and expats: Locals (long-term residents, Swiss or other nationalities), are you interested in helping expats settle in the Basel area by becoming a buddy or Götti? This is your chance to share your knowledge and enthusiasm about life here with newcomers. Expats, are you interested in learning more about the Basel area through its richest resource, its people? Join us and meet long-term residents who will help you make the most of your time in Basel. Please RSVP by selecting the "Sign Up Now" button/link below and completing the registration form by January 15.
For more information on this and other BaselConnect events, please visit our calendar page at this link.
We appreciate your support of BaselConnect and ask that you forward this email to anyone you know who might also be interested.
With best regards,

Kathy Hartmann-Campbell, Chair, BaselConnect Association

No matter how hard you've been working to finish the final touches on your mounds of paperwork or documentation, clearing off your desk, or baking pies, by now you all are keenly aware it is holiday season - Christmas and the New Year is fast approaching. Here's to one last "hurrah" attempt of bring the site up-to-date: this is a sweep up of the recent updates to get ready 2013 and other random notes that came in on the bulletin board at the centre earlier this week. That's it! Thank you all for your commitment and continued support of Centrepoint. We couldn't do it without your smiles, gratitude and love.

Noddy Holden references aside... here's at least one correction from the print copy of the December 2012/January 2013 Horizon that all Centrepoint members should know about: - Page 7: the Annual New Year's Party will be held on Friday, January 25th from 20:00 to 23:00, not on the 18th. The location remains the same, downstairs Foyer room, Im Lohnhof 8. Members only!
Thanks for your understanding and hope to see some of you there.

Better late than never: just wanted to let you all know that there's a TGIF event tonight, organized by Dirk. We're meeting at 18:30, at the bar of Noohn's on Henrich-Petri Strasse. http://noohn.ch/en/contact/ The "closest" tram stop is Tram 2 - Kirschgarten, but it is just as easy to walk to from Bankverein or Aeschenplatz as well. Hope to see some of you there! all the best, have a great weekend! Tania
