Ustina Yakovleva's artworks, for the first time displayed in Switzerland, develop as living organisms might - they consist of small, repetitive gestures (in graphite or thread or beads) which build up over time like pieces of coral or growing plants. It is a kind of automatic writing, which binds time into a material form. Works in other media have the similar principle - embroideries which evolve into forms often unpredictable for the artist herself, beads and thread sculptures reminiscent of continents or icebergs, or possibly electronic circuits rooted in empty air.

"I create works without sketches as I am interested in self-forming composition as part of the creation process. My drawings develop as living organisms, taking new forms throughout the work. Individual elements construct larger structures, like the atoms and cells construct the objects around us." Says Yakovleva.

Born in Russia in 1987, Ustina Yakovleva graduated from Moscow State Pedagogical University (Graphics Faculty) in 2009 and from the Institute of Contemporary Art in 2009. She works and lives in Moscow.

Come to the vernissage and meet the artist. No need to book, just come along on Friday 19th October from 18:00 - 21:00. The Artwall events are free and open to the public so it can be a great opportunity to bring a new friend to Centrepoint and enjoy a glass of wine and snacks together with others curious to know more about the art and what the artist has to say.
