The Annual Beer Fest Basel

Coinciding with the start of the hop harvest season, the Basler Biermarkt reflects brewing history while showcasing how varied and creative the city’s contemporary brewing scene has become. Now in its 12th year, the market brings together more than 25 local craft breweries, each with its own approach to ingredients, recipes and brewing. Rather than representing a single style of Basel beer, the gathering offers a glimpse into the remarkable diversity of the region’s modern brewing landscape.

Basel’s Brewing Tradition

Basel has a long and distinctive relationship with beer. For generations brewing has been part of the city’s character with small breweries, traditional beer cellars and local beer culture contributing to the social life of Basel. Today, that tradition continues in a new form through the many independent breweries that have emerged across Basel and the surrounding region.

For someone discovering Basel’s beer culture this variety is perhaps the most interesting aspect. One brewery may concentrate on traditional methods and familiar styles, while another experiments with hops, fermentation or unusual combinations of flavours. Together they illustrate how an old brewing tradition has developed into a lively contemporary craft scene.

The Basler Biermarkt takes place on 28 and 29 August 2026, at Vogesenplatz near Bahnhof St. Johann. The square itself is part of a neighbourhood worth exploring, particularly on market days, and its location makes the Biermarkt easy to reach by public transport. Tram No. 1 connects Bahnhof SBB with the area making it possible to enjoy the event without needing to drive.

A starter kit costs CHF 20 and includes a commemorative glass and beer tokens. The market is open on both days from 16:00 to 23:00. Covered areas beneath the bridge and large tents provide shelter should the weather turn.

More than a Beer Festival

Although the focus is naturally on brewing, the Biermarkt also reflects something broader about Basel: its strong sense of community. The gathering brings together established brewers, newer independent producers and people interested in discovering what is being made locally. Eight food trucks complement the beers with everything from Swiss specialities to international dishes.

In this sense, the Basler Biermarkt is less about a single festival weekend than about the continuing story of beer in Basel. It offers an opportunity to see how the city’s brewing heritage has survived, changed and expanded, with a growing number of breweries giving that tradition new character.
